Few services in Gaming have been as successful as Discord. It has grown at a phenomenal pace over the past few years and has catapulted itself into a must-have software for gaming. Discord has constantly been innovating. They recently announced the launch of verified team servers.

These verified servers include teams such as Liquid, Cloud9 and all the Overwatch League teams.

What is Discord?

Discord’s concept came to CEO Jason Citron as he understood the problems his company faced. Jason Citron founded Hammer & Chisel, a game development company in 2012. The company produced a MOBA designed for Mobile, Fates Forever. It launched to a lot of hype and excitement but was not commercially successful.

However, Jason soon pivoted his company as he realised there is a glaring gap in the industry. With the team having to use Skype or Teamspeak for communication; there were a lot of security and performance issues constantly brought up. Users often had their IP addresses leaked and it would also result in several matches being DDOS’ed in the early years of CS GO.

Discord was born out of a necessity and it has grown very fast since then. The company has reached more than 90 million users by the end of November 2017 and is well poised to reach 100 million users very soon. The critical landmark will be crucial as the popularity of Discord grows. More and more teams and players are using Discord for communicating over voice & text. It is also host to several communities where gamers can share ideas, gifs and highlights.

Verified servers for Official teams

Discord has partnered up with teams to create official and verified servers. This follows their move to bring around verified game servers to their software in October 2017.

Twelve OWL teams
All twelve OWL teams will have verified discord servers

Several teams already use Discord to communicate with their fans. These servers usually are full of fans and they include watch parties when the teams have a scheduled match.Team Liquid is one of the first twenty teams to be accorded the official verified status.

“It’s where all the gamers are. And, it is the only social messaging app that allows for a real-time back-and-forth between the teams and the fans. Our Discord server is the official hub for Liquid fans, players, and staff; and host to our pro team events”

Team Liquid co-chief executive officer Steve Arhancet.

The program launched on February 22nd and we already have several esports teams with verified servers. This allows players and fans to communicate, share news and fosters discussions about matches. All twelve of the Overwatch league teams have Discord servers. Discord will provide them with a verified status.

Dreamhack will also be getting an officially verified server. Dreamhack regularly holds esports events around the world. They are one of the best tournament organisers in esports.

“At DreamHack we had always used IRC to communicate with our communities until Discord came around. Today we’ve more or less moved away from IRC to only use Discord. With our server verified our community knows where to find us and can be confident it’s actual DreamHack personnel answering their questions”

DreamHack chief technology officer Markus Viitamäki.

Discord has laid down some rules required for verification. These include moderators, 2FA ( Two Factor Authentication) and explicit content filtering. The rules have been laid out on the official blog.

Customised for Gamers

The service is customised for gamers. It eliminates several of the key problems that gamers faced in the era before discord. Skype and TeamSpeak were the most popular VoIP channels and there were problems galore with them. The software launched on the 6th of March, 2015 and in just three years it is poised to reach 100 million users.

Discord is the only cross-platform voice and text chat app designed specifically for gamers. With the Discord Android app you can stay connected to all your Discord voice and text chat channels even while AFK.

The software is available on PC as well as on Mobile. It syncs your gaming profile with the Discord servers and allows your friends to see which game you are playing. With various services such as Battle.net and Steam being supported by Discord, you can view whatever games your friends are playing.

It also automatically loads up all the servers which you are a part of. Unlike the early days of TeamSpeak, you do not need to enter IP addresses to join the servers. More importantly, it is a free service which is one part of the reason why it is so successful.

Music rooms, viewing parties and more

Most of the official discord servers already have access to the players, the coaches and the support staff. The teams usually hire moderators to maintain the quality of the discord server. Team announcements are visible on the official discord servers as well as various other social platforms.

With Spotify integration and support for verified musicians, Discord is looking to become the destination for gamers. It has also released new features such as Video Calling and screen sharing to the software

Overwatch League teams constantly announce their viewing parties, their match timings and other essential news via discord. Since it is a free service, Discord has seen rapid growth. The verified tick mark is a proof of the authenticity of the team servers.

Gamers and users mostly use Discord cause of its UI and the fact that it is free to use. Anyone can create a server on Discord. With over $80 million in funding till now, Discord has been one of the hottest investments in esports. How they continue this growth while maintaining a viable financial model is still debatable.
