The full list of participating teams:
- Team Liquid
- Optic Gaming
- G2 Esports
- Faze Clan
The Contenders – Astralis and Team Liquid
Astralis and Team Liquid are the top contenders for ESL One New York 2019. Team Liquid is the best team in the world despite their inability to win a Major. The North American squad lost to Astralis in the quarterfinals of the Berlin Major, clearing the way for the Danes to win the Starladder Berlin Major 2019.
Astralis has dominated the CS:GO scene for the entirety of 2018; however, their performance saw a steep decline in 2019. Team Liquid completed the Intel Grand Slam in just five tournaments, breaking Astralis’ 2018 record. However, on the big stage, Astralis stepped up their game and their quarterfinal victory over Team Liquid was the tipping point for the Danish squad.
Twistzz promised us that Team Liquid would bounce back and win ESL One New York. This tournament is turning out to be more of Astralis vs Team Liquid showdown with the other teams just proving to be obstacles on the way.
The Challengers: NRG, ENCE, G2 Esports
NRG reached the semifinals at the Starladder Berlin Major 2019 where they lost to Astralis 0-2. NRG has one of the strongest lineups in North America with a tri-core lineup featuring Tarik, Brehze and NahtE. In addition, NRG also has CeRq on their roster who can step up on occasions. CeRq is the X-factor on the team and an excellent performance from the player can quickly propel NRG into the final stages of ESL One New York.
ENCE added Sunny to replace AleksiB on their team, a decision that drew a lot of criticism from the community. They had an abysmal showing at BLAST Pro Series Moscow, where they finished in the 5th place. They lost against teams such as forZe and AVANGAR and a string of tied matches with other teams. ENCE’s new roster means significant changes to their playstyle, including work on their map pool which is small right now.
The last of the contenders is G2 esports, who are looking to change their roster. According to Nel from 1pv.Fr G2 are looking to replace Shox and Lucky. However, with no confirmed roster moves yet, we can only assume that the current roster is on its last legs. There is still some time for ESL One New York and G2 might announce something in the next few days.
The Dark Horse: FaZe Clan, eUnited, Optic Gaming
FaZe Clan, eUnited and Optic Gaming come into this tournament with the least chances of moving forward to the Playoffs. FaZe Clan is an International team with some big names; however, the team recently transferred Guardian to his former team Natus Vincere.
The FaZe Roster has just four members and they are yet to announce their fifth player. With limited time on their hands, YnK will not have enough time on their hands to get the team ready for ESL One New York. During and before the Major, FaZe Clan’s performance was underwhelming and not at the same level as the big names on their list.
eUnited and Optic Gaming can prove to be a dark horse coming into ESL One New York. There is very little information about these teams’ performances, especially at Tier-One events such as ESL One New York.
